Jim Garlits is an overgrown Boy Scout with ADHD.  His ultimate goal involves writing, early retirement in a Class C RV, and a continuous circuit of thru-hikes and long distance bike treks until he turns 100, at which point he’s going to try for a spot in the Senior X Games.

IMG_1717His five year plan is to complete a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail with his oldest son, a post-traumatic OEF combat medic and safety manager for the largest online retailer in the world. For now, he hiked in the woods and ride his bike on converted rail trails and camps in a hammock.

At present, he’s a Certified Emergency Manager (CEM) working at Indiana University as their emergency management coordinator, having just finished up a 20 year career as well as a medical plans and operations officer and Master Resilience Trainer (MRT) in the Indiana Army National Guard.  He and his wife Tawnya have four children, one of whom still lives at home.

Jim graduated from Ball State University in 1989 with a degree in magazine journalism and has done relatively little with it, except writing for contributor copies, thrills and kill fees.  He procrastinates writing from Shelbyville, Indiana.

  1. I love the title of your blog; I’m frequently lamenting the fact that no one seems to have common sense anymore!

  2. Thank you for visiting my blog and for following. You have a great blog here, I’m looking forward to following your hiking and other adventures. 🙂 Take care and be careful out there!
